Brown Patch

Caused by hot, wet conditions, you can identify brown patch by the tell-tale 3-10 foot circles of dead grass it leaves behind. Be careful when watering this summer because water tends to evaporate quickly during hot, sunny afternoons. To mitigate this, water early in the morning to slow the evaporation process.

Powdery Mildew

Powdery mildew is most common in late spring and early fall when the days are shorter. It presents itself as a white powder on the blades of your grass, resembling chalk lines on a football field. Overseeding with shade-tolerant grasses and trimming your trees are great ways to prevent future outbreaks.

Snow Mold

Snow mold occurs when leaves and other debris are left on your yard over the winter. In the spring, it will appear as white, web-like spots. Luckily, this problem usually clears up after raking and letting the area dry.

Dollar Spot

Dollar spot is another type of fungus spread by too much water. The fungus usually appears as a dead patch about the size of a silver dollar. It merges with other spots as it grows, creating a very unsightly pattern in your lawn. Aerating and overseeding can help improve drainage and resistance to the disease.

Red Thread

Red thread mostly affects fine fescues and ryegrass. It appears as red web-like threads. As the disease progresses, it can leave your lawn looking scorched. Maintaining a regular watering and fertilization schedule can help prevent red thread.

Japanese Beetles

Japanese beetles are an invasive species that can damage not only your yard but your trees and shrubs as well. The beetle’s larvae feed on the roots of your grass in the spring and fall causing vast amounts of damage.

Grubs/June Bugs

The most common grub that homeowners deal with is that of the June bug larvae. These pests can kill large swaths of grass or even obliterate an entire yard if left unchecked. In the summer, the adults emerge and feed on trees and shrubs before depositing more eggs in your soil. Grubs cause indirect damage to your lawn by attracting diggers such as moles, skunks, birds, and raccoons.

Sod Webworms

These pests are hard to find since they hide during the day and emerge at night to feed on your lawn. Webworm activity presents itself as baseball-sized brown patches on your lawn.

Chinch Bugs

A common lawn pest in New England is the chinch bug. Adults spend the winter in debris and leaves. Chinch bugs enjoy feeding on red fescues, perennial ryegrass, and Kentucky bluegrass. Damage is most visible from early July through late August.
