Are Lawn Treatments Safe for Kids and Pets?

This is the question we get more than any other, and it deserves a better answer than “yes, don’t worry.” The short version: the products we use are registered for residential lawns, we apply them at label rates by trained technicians, and the yard is safe to use once the application is dry. The longer version is below, because if you have a toddler who eats grass or a dog who eats everything, you should know what is going on the lawn and why.

What Is Actually Being Applied

A lawn program is mostly fertilizer. Fertilizer is plant food, either synthetic nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium or, on our organic program, natural materials that feed the soil. Lime is ground limestone. Neither is a pesticide, and both can be walked on as soon as they are down, though we suggest waiting until granular products have been watered in so they are not tracked inside.

The pesticides in a program are targeted and seasonal. Crabgrass pre-emergent goes down in spring and forms a barrier in the top layer of soil. Broadleaf weed control is applied to the weeds, not broadcast over the whole lawn unless the lawn is full of them. Grub preventer, Acelepryn in our case, is one application in spring. Mosquito and tick treatments go on foliage, the lawn edge, and shaded areas, not the open lawn where people sit.

Reduced-Risk Products

The EPA has a category for pesticides that pose lower risk to people, pets, and the environment than the alternatives, and we choose from it where we can. Acelepryn, our grub preventer, is the clearest example: it has very low toxicity to mammals, birds, fish, and bees, which is why it is the standard on golf courses and school grounds as well as home lawns. Our broadleaf and crabgrass products are chosen for the same reasons. If you want to know the exact product on a given visit, ask; the technician will tell you, and it is on the service notice we leave.

How Long to Stay Off the Lawn

Until the application is dry. For liquid applications that is usually one to two hours on a normal day, longer if it is humid or cool. Granular fertilizer and lime can be walked on right away, and watering them in is better for the lawn anyway. For mosquito and tick treatments, keep people and pets inside for 30 minutes to an hour while the foliage dries. We leave a notice at every visit, and if you are on a schedule where you need a specific window, tell us and we will work around it.

Dogs are the usual concern, and the honest answer is that a dog on a treated lawn after it has dried is exposed to very little. The precautions that matter are the simple ones: keep the dog inside during the application and until it dries, and do not let them drink from puddles on a freshly treated lawn. If your dog has a history of sensitivity or a health condition, mention it and we will adjust.

If You Want to Avoid Synthetic Products

Our 100% organic program uses organic fertilizer and lime with no synthetic herbicide or insecticide unless you add it. It grows a healthy lawn more slowly and with more weeds in year one, and it removes most of the questions on this page. We also offer organic mosquito and tick treatments using botanical products. Ask for them by name when you request a quote; we will tell you plainly what the tradeoffs are.

Treatments Versus What They Prevent

It is worth weighing the other side. Rhode Island has one of the highest Lyme disease rates in the country, and the state monitors for EEE and West Nile every summer. A yard tick treatment applied to the lawn edge, where the ticks are, is a much smaller exposure for a child than the ticks themselves. Grub damage leads to skunks and raccoons digging up the yard, which is its own problem for pets. The goal is not zero products; it is the smallest amount of the right product, in the right place, at the right time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can my kids play on the lawn the same day it is treated?

Yes, once it is dry. Same-day is fine for granular fertilizer and lime; wait an hour or two after liquid applications.

Do you post a sign?

Yes, at every visit, along with a notice of what was applied.

What about our vegetable garden or fruit trees?

Tell us where they are. We keep applications off edible plants and treat around them.

We have chickens or bees. Can you still treat?

Usually, with adjustments. We avoid flowering plants pollinators are working, time mosquito treatments to avoid peak bee activity, and keep applications away from coops and runs. Tell us before the first visit.

Is organic really safer?

Organic fertilizer removes the synthetic inputs, which is what most people mean by safer. It does not make a lawn weed-free or tick-free on its own. We are happy to build a program that is organic where it matters most to you and conventional where you need results.
